Away cup match

A really tough result against good opposition today.

Playing on a full size astroturf pitch, in full size goals, against the team who are top of the league was always going to be tough.

Lightbowne attacked from the start and Roach Greens were making it tough for themselves by giving up possession too easily. In the 14th minute, a long ball down the right saw the home team take the lead. Rather than regroup, Roach gave possession away cheaply from the kick off and Lightbowne scored a second goal just a minute later. A 3rd goal in the 20th minute prompted a change in formation in a damage limitation effort, with Dan moving to left back and Roach moving to a back four. This seemed to help, and Roach Greens finally started to string some passes together and create a few chances. The home team were having lots of joy with the long ball over the top and used this tactic again to grab a 4th goal before half time.

During half time, we talked about not giving the ball away so easily and trying to play more on the ground.

The team talk seemed to be working as Roach Greens started the second half seeing much more of the ball and creating some good chances. In the 39th minute, good play from Ewan paid off with Xavier finding space in the box to poke home into the corner. It looked like a glimmer of hope to get back into the match, and for the next 10 minutes Roach Greens pushed for a second. Sadly, the home team played on the break and yet another ball over the top saw them grab a 5th goal and kill off the Roach fightback. Heads dropped a little and the wind seemed to have been taken out of the Roach sails. Lightbowne went on to grab 4 more goals in the last 15 minutes with Roach really just wanting the game to be over. Thankfully, that's the last time we need to play away at Lightbowne this season!

Man of the match awards went to Harvey, who was brilliant playing out from the back, Callum who battled really well in the midfield and Ewan who ran tirelessly up front all game.
