So the score line suggests a bit of a one sided affair, but the truth is The Revs matched the opposition almost all over the pitch and had they been more clinical then the score line would be much closer.
But clinical finishing has always been The Revs weakness. And with hangovers to contend with and a striker’s first game back it was always going to be a struggle anyway.
The opposition took a 2 goal lead into half time but even then the lads didn’t think they were a million miles away from getting something from this game. As mentioned, there were chances, sometimes a little more composure in front of goal was needed but instead were snatched at and never really tested the keeper as a result.
The Revs finally got on the score sheet in the early minutes of the second half. Evans Snr holding the ball up, playing in Hartrick who found Evans Jnr in full flight to run onto the ball and strike it past the keeper halving the deficit.
Unfortunately the opposition broke almost immediately from kick off and a dangerous cross was completely misjudged by Evans Snr who finished low and hard into the bottom corner leaving Myers stood helpless.
It wasn’t long before Myers was in action again and something similar with Evans Snr half blocking a shot that wrong footed Myers but he pulled off a simply wonderful save to deny a 4th. Even the opposition admired the effort.
Unfortunately a 4th soon went in and The Revs found themselves 4-1 down but still battled on.
Hartrick came close once again after sterling work from Tyman put him in but ring rust was evident. Hartrick tried sitting keeper on his backside but took too much time by which point a defender had got on the line. Between keeper and defender the ball somehow was kept out and led to a corner.
Hartrick did ping the ball in from the corner and a few neat ricochets led to an own goal and get the team back within 2.
But once again The Revs allowed the opposition forward and they grabbed a 5th more or less straight away – proving their superiority in front of goal.
There was one moment of magic though from man of the match Lewis Evans. He skilfully lofted the ball over an oncoming attacker and burst forward brushing of a few would be tacklers. He was only stopped by his own bad touch further down the field, but the bit of skill to get away from his own area was to be admired.
I personally feel next time the score line will be much closer – and based upon the efforts of last night – in The Revs favour! Plenty of positives to be had.
