The dictionary definition states "entirely without any flaws, defects or shortcomings".
Sometimes things are just so perfect that it is almost dreamlike, like it isn’t actually possible. Everything goes right, everything goes your way. The perfect Hollywood script, the perfect performance…
But last night wasn’t one of those moments.
However, last season The Revs lost their opener and it came back to haunt them. This time at least the result was perfect, if not the performance.
The Revs squandered plenty of opportunities throughout the game last night. Both Hartrick and James Evans blazing over horribly. Wrong decisions, poor passing and a general malaise about play really allowed The Impossible Dreamers to think they had a shot.
They never really truly threatened though. It was always going to be a case of The Revs losing this, rather than the opposition winning it.
In fact at times the shoddy play from both sides was embarrassing. It was like the Chuckle Brothers had been reincarnated… what? One is still alive?!?!
Apart from god knows how many balls lost over the fence due to poor shooting, there was also the moment Beardall played a quick kick in and both the opposition defender and Revs striker watched the ball roll past thinking it was from the other pitch – dumbfounded, looking like they had never seen a ball before.
There was also the referee who really should think about retiring. At 102 years old his passion for the game is evident, but poor eye sight and a lack of fundamental maths means both sets of players scratched their head at the decisions. Although it did serve The Revs the better of the two on one occasion when Tyman was judged to have taken man and not ball and it should have been a penalty but instead the ref gave a free-kick which was dealt with easily.
As the game wore on it was evident that it would take a moment of quality or a mistake to win this game. So late on when James Evans intercepted a wayward pass in the middle of the park and then under pressure played in Hartrick, it was that moment of quality to finish past an on-rushing keeper that decided the game.
Yes the opposition put on a bit of pressure late on, but the defence scrambled everything away, Dave Pinkstone particularly getting stuck in clearing the danger whenever it approached. He almost capped his MOTM display with a goal near the end too after nutmegging the defender but not quite reaching the ball before the keeper cleared his lines.
The Revs will undoubtedly get better as the season goes on but it was all about the 3 points last night. So The Revs start with a win and also add to their clean sheet tally without playing all that well.
So maybe, in the end, it was perfect after all?!?!
