vs Smack My Pitch Up

Home league match

Sometimes you just have to concede that the opposition were far superior in every way. It wasn’t for a lack of effort by the lads. It wasn’t because The Revs made that many mistakes. The opposition were just a level above. So much was the dominance by Smack My Pitch Up, that The Revs didn’t get a meaningful attack until into the second half.

The opposition were well drilled, quick, and hungry, they hounded whenever we had a sniff of the ball and they were relentless. They were like a machine sent from the future…

…Listen, and understand… That team is out there. They can’t be bargained with, they can’t be reasoned with. They don’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop – ever! Until The Revs are dead (on their feet).

They hit every bit of woodwork – sometimes aided by a Revs player – Steane pulled off some cracking saves time and time again in the first half to at least keep The Revs in the game. The scrambling defence wasn’t pretty either, but for the main it worked.

Their goals were on the whole, things of beauty. One point Evans Snr tracked his runner, thought he had done everything right pushing him out wide, but the lad had the audacity to ping a bending shot round and in off one post to the other and the back of the net giving Steane no chance.

You sometimes just had to admire the play.

As I say the effort was there by all. Evans Jnr was trying to his strength time and time again, but the opposition used their acceleration to avoid any big hits, Tyman had a good few battles, he was not going down without a fight and Beardall wanted revenge for one lad wrong footing him, giving him some showboating back However, it was actually Hartrick, who in the second half dropped really deep, who left the biggest impression.

He kept their very good forward player quiet in the second half, didn’t allow himself to be turned and even if his man got away somehow got some decisive blocks in. I’m not going to lie, this was a whole new side to Hartrick’s game we do not often see, but he certainly wasn’t hiding.

No one was hiding, every lad tried, tracked, tackled, but The Revs were not good enough to compete. The chances that came in the second half never really troubled their keeper or the score line. Dave P’s lack of power in the shot at close range led to an easy take for the keeper, Evans Snr with a snap shot out wide that went out wide and Beardall’s half volley that cleared the cage. That was pretty much it.

We all know this is one of the harder games in this campaign. The Revs will re-group and go again next week. And last night won’t affect anyone!
