Home league match
Games against the Misfits are always a very close affair. With one win and one loss to them, it was inevitable that a draw was coming.
Both teams are similar and evenly matched, but tonight this game felt like it should have been a win. The Revs opened the opposition up at will on occasion tonight and some of the football at times was sublime.
Put it this way, it was a much better performance than last week and the team really encouraged each other during the game. The reports of team spirit going awry are greatly exaggerated.
In fact, The Revs had the full contingent of players in attendance with both H (although he missed most of the game still having his pre-match shit!) and Mr Myers, crutches and all, coming along to support.
The Revs were the quicker to settle with Evans Snr robbing their defender in the first minute to get a snap shot off. In fact the majority of the team got in on the act and things looked comfortable. Steane didn’t have much to do for the first 10 minutes in truth.
The Revs soon made their dominance count after Beardall intercepted the ball and played into Evans Snr who turned his man and finished in the bottom corner.
Things were going well.
Around the 12th minute the opposition got their luck though – their breakthrough – when their decent player managed to squeeze a shot out and the rebound off Tyman was unfortunate as it evaded Steane who had no chance. All square… we’ve been here before!
The period after their goal saw the Misfits dominate. This was where Steane earnt his metal as he thwarted the opposition with a string of superb saves. He occasionally got himself into trouble with clearances but the team were in no mood to concede and soon recovered the ball.
Eventually the game became end to end, but The Revs certainly had the better chances with Evans Snr, Evans Jnr (and his 50p knee), Tyman, Allen and even Pinkstone Snr missing vital chances – or their dodgy keeper somehow pulled off stops or the woodwork saved Misfits on a few occasions.
It seemed this was going to be one of those days…
There is no dramatic end to this story by the way… it really was one of those days! The game petering out to a 1-1 draw. That was an anti-climax wasn't it?!?!
However, there was one moment of ‘brilliance’ of note to mention. Lewis Evans, with the ball at his feet, was quickly closed down by the defender. Lewis looked up, saw a runner in the distance and pinged the ball forward… or did he??? As the ball was still at his feet, the defender had turned his back, Lewis looked down, saw the ball and carried on his run… Everybody, I introduce Lewnaldo!!
So in conclusion, the boys battled hard for the draw, stopped the rot from last week, but ultimately could have and should have taken all 3 points. At least harmony is restored though!
