They say fortune favours the brave, but on this occasion it just dealt out a lesson.
The Revs were up against the current champions, but already the team had learnt from the previous week. Myers was back in goal, which gave the team confidence and the shape of the team was generally very good. The first half was very nip and tuck. The opposition had the most possession and they did look dangerous, but The Revs' scrambling defence seemed to deal with everything that came at them.
Going forward The Revs had opportunities, Hartrick holding the ball up very well and playing in Evans at one point, but the keeper wiped him out when through on goal. A bit dubious looking back, but more on that later.
The Revs were looking more comfortable than the previous week, but just before half time came a hammer blow. A lame shot from the opposition, Steane ducked to head the ball but missed and Myers spilled the ball into the goal. The opposition had the breakthrough they wanted.
The second half, much like the previous week, had The Revs on the forward foot with good movement going forward. Beardall and D. Pinkstone skipping down the flanks on several occasions, but the attack play fizzling out. Tyman had a long range effort go wide, as did Evans, Steane also looked dangerous going forward. Even P. Pinkstone got in on the act with a surging run knocking the ball in Hartrick who just couldn't connect.
Then The Revs had their breakthrough, making the pressure count as D. Pinkstone intercepted the keeper pass to blast into the far corner of the goal levelling things up.
The Revs were back in the game.
Around ten minutes later the opposition got a fortuitous goal to go 2-1 up after impeding Myers, but The Revs still looked in the game and went hunting for a second equaliser. Hartrick hitting the post with a brilliant pile driver, Beardall with a follow up that was blocked by a desperate defender. This was where the lesson began. The opposition soaked up attack after attack and knew to hit The Revs on the break. A third goal followed (an error of judement in defence) and a final goal (a fluke hit and hope) to make the scoreline look incredibly one sided.
In the final few minutes Myers wiped out their attacker as he bore down on goal, although he got some of the ball. The opposition bayed for blood and wanted Myers to walk, but the ref saw sense in the dying stages and just awarded a freekick. What made this different to earlier in the game when Evans was wiped out, only the ref will know!
The final whistle went and The Revs were totally dejected at the result. The opposition had some kind words to say, however, stating that it will take time to get used to this format and that once The Revs sort themselves positionally it will be much closer.
So we move forward to next week, hoping to improve once again and hopefully get some points on the board.
RTID!
