After last week's misfire of a game that the Revs were actually playing well in, this week was looking deflating on paper. Filthy heat, top of the league, no subs, and Ty having to bring enough water for all of us - enthusiasm was at an all time low.
So lining up for the Revs we had Matt the Cat in goal, in front of him James, Lewis, Ty, Dave P and Dave H. Gaz was out injured, Olly was working, Jamie was on holiday, and Phil was wearing a vest.
So with nothing to play for the Revs decided to stay positive, be defensive and roll the dice. Last time out against this lot we were slightly unlucky so nothing to fear, but it was hotter than Phil's browser history out there, would we have taken a 2-0 defeat before kick-off? Probably...
So, first half, and let's not beat around the George (Bush), we were good. Defensively we were solid, the heat taking the pace out of the game and allowing us stay with our men, be compact and make it difficult to break us down. We weren't offering too much up front other than a couple of wonderful moves on the break that ultimately came to nothing, but we were doing enough.
We got to halftime at 0-0, we could have even snuck one if Dave H had finished either one of his shots, or Lewis could have connected better with his, the mood was chipper, win lose or draw from here we'd put in a very good half and that was enough.
The second half, if anything, was even better. Defenders dug in, midfield tackled big, attackers worked some space and after being robbed of a clear cut penalty we scored 30 seconds later. Ty tackled a defender and broke, playing in Dave H who slotted it home. One nil up? Heavens, whatever next.
We did concede an equaliser but it didn't really matter. We played really well, put some good moves together, couple of really nice touches up front went astray when people died in the heat and couldn't get onto them, defensively we remained really difficult to break down and blocked, tackled and shouldered our way to a point that felt like three.
So finally, on the last day of the season we put a performance together which means only one thing - better late than never. On to next season with a spring in our step.
