It was always going to happen at some point – the monkey on the back of The Revs and their unbeaten start to this season. Finally in the 8th game of the season, well into the second half of the season, The Revs conceded not once, but twice and could not offer a reply as they crashed to a 2-0 loss in the heavy rain.
The game just never went the way of The Revs. The opposition had a game plan, sit back and wait for a mistake and then hit on the counter attack with such speed. On the whole The Revs defended, even if it wasn’t pretty, well throughout the game. Their dangerous forward play was nullified and if breached Tyman was on hand in a starring role in between the sticks.
The disappointed aspect was that Tyman was also the catalyst for much of our attacking play too. The opposition allowing him to come out with the ball on many occasions and he even managed a shot on target as a result.
The conditions didn’t help but The Revs attacking play was missing for most part and the ball kept coming back at the defence as a result. Once the opposition got the break and went one up before half time it was always going to be a tough ask to get back into the game.
However, the positives at half time was that The Revs had been outplayed but were still only 1-0 down.
The second half was much improved although the keeper was never truly tested. The Revs did start finding a rhythm and passing the ball about and space was created down the middle. The opposition sat back, waiting to pounce on any mistake.
And unfortunately that mistake came. Allen bringing the ball forward after a one two with Tyman, who was closed down so quickly, so instantly, and lost possession. Suddenly the counter was on, Lewis Evans managed to get back, blocking a follow up after a save from Tyman, but it was third time lucky for the opposition as a third man swept in and smashed in goal number 2.
That was essentially job done for the opposition. And as The Revs went looking to pile on the pressure and find a goal, they counter attacked looking for a third. Only Allen’s goal line clearance prevented further damage.
The Revs continued to pin them in and continued to put the pressure on leading to corners and kick ins but the goal never came. The final ball was not there for The Revs, even if the space was. First touches went awry and secondary balls were picked off by the opposition.
So the first loss of the season was a painful blow but hopefully not a deadly one. The destination of this title is still in the hands of The Revs and we chalk this one down to a bad day at the office.
If you had told me that The Revs would be top with 4 games to go, only have lost once and only conceded three times I would have suggested you have had one too many Krombachers!
Onwards and upwards lads, we keep fighting the good fight!
