Siberian tigers, a happy woman, even unicorns… these are all rare things in life. Some are even non-existent… You can decide out of the 3 which one I mean! But a 0-0 draw at small sided football truly is a rarity.
The Revs needed a performance after last week’s shambles and to a certain extent we got one last night.
In terms of action and points of note there isn’t much to write about. Both teams were set up similar to hit on the counter and so cancelled each other out.
I mean if we are being harsh this was a winnable game for The Revs and so there was disappointment at the end, but let’s not languish on the negatives.
The positives are that communication, the well drilled defence and a clean sheet for Steane after his horror show last week were welcomed.
Yes the ball didn’t stick much upfront and their keeper was not tested nearly enough in wet conditions. It truly was one of those games where a mistake would cost – but thankfully that didn’t happen. Yes, The Revs should have shown more adventure at times and the ref made a few dodgy choices that got under the skin, but to shut out a team that scored 4 against SAPA recently is an achievement.
Small victories in a game of not much action.
The keepers both had one save of merit each. Steane pulled off a good save to deny them late on after their striker drilled through a crowd and Lewis almost nicked it with a sublime lofted shot taken early and almost taking their keeper by surprise. His slo-mo save sparing their blushes with a minute left on the clock.
The first half was the better for The Revs with a period of dominance leading to a glut of corners that were not taken advantage of and Lew was in typically bullish mode in the first half with a shoulder barge that sent their lad back to the Victorian times, but as the game wore on, the teams cancelled each other out and the aging legs of The Revs tired.
There were half chances for H and the ever improving Dave P, but that was it. The opposition were frustrated with Ty who headed everything in sight, taking balls to the face on a regular basis – not sure if this is the first time this sentence has been made with Ty in mind! Steane got kicked on the floor from a frustrated striker that momentarily threatened to spill over and Dave P crunched a lad with a perfectly times tackle but the ref didn’t allow advantage when The Revs broke after the loose ball popped out.
At one point, late in the second half, H was looking for divine inspiration on his knees praying for the winner whilst on the bench… it turned out he was on his knees having a pee instead… his bladder is weaker than my Grandad’s!!
So we take the performance and we build on it into next week. Onwards and upwards!
