Home league match
It was the first spring morning of the year with baking sunshine and a perfect pitch as we hosted the league leaders Godstone who had only dropped points 3 times this season. A different team lined up compared to previous weeks with Lewis, Danny, Paulie, Mikey, George, Damo, Gillett and Pearce all missing so we brought in the clubs all time leading goalscorer Sammy B, Gary Dean, Josh Carroll and Fabio all returned with Elliott Andrews making his debut. It was a close affair over the first 25 minutes with both teams having a dangerous chance each with both chances going narrowly over including Alex Smith's fantastic effort which skimmed the bar. The breakthrough came against the run of play as a long ball found a Godstone head and the striker was able to nip through the last line of defence and chip the keeper. We started to get sloppy and give away a lot of corners and free kicks on the edge which we swatted away for the most part including a goal line clearance from Driver but they managed to break through and scored 2 good headers from set pieces.
We went in at half time 3-0 down albeit a little undeservedly and the second half was another tight affair which saw little chances until they managed another breakaway and scored a 4th. We applied some good late pressure and created chances with Gary Dean going close after a good run and Carroll Jr and Sammy B also having good chances before we finally got the goal we deserved when Alex Smith played in Sammy B who fired it into the top corner from close range. We were unfortunate to lose 4-1 and the score didn't really tell the truth, we made a couple of mistakes from set pieces and they were able to nip in behind us twice. They are a good team and will deservedly go on to win the league but we know that we are good enough to compete with teams on this level.
