vs Caterham Pumas Legends
Home league match
At a point in the season where the Reigate title challenge has faded in the past and could have gone either way this season we showed our mettle with a crushing victory over Caterham Pumas Legends. They are top by a fair way but now the gap between them and us is down to 4 and the Reigate juggernaut has 3 games in hand.
The game was very close early doors, neither team had any close cut chances and it looked like being the tight game it promised to be. Joint gaffer Jack Carroll suffered playing through an injury and was replaced by the other joint gaffer Chris Wigley on about 15 minutes. The game was turned on it's head when Reigate went mental and put 4 goals in within 10 minutes.
It started when the returning Eamonn found a through ball to Smith who rounded the keeper and tapped in. That was followed very swiftly when Saunders made a good challenge in their half and played the ball to Wigley who was able to open up from the left hand side of the box and made sure the ball made the net. 3 followed when Smithy comfortably beat the full back and put a great ball into the box where Wigley made no mistake with a good header.
The 4th though overshadowed those the preceded it as the keeper made a poor clearance which landed at the feet of Saunders 40 (Yes, 40 Billy ;D) yards out and the only thing that went through his mind was replicated by the feet and the once the strike had lofted past the keeper there was only one outcome and the Reigate faithful lifted the roof for a contender for goal of the season.
At half time we came out to finish the job professionally but we needn't have bothered as Caterham were beating themselves up enough to do the job for us. The game was settled when Wigley's pass to Smith allowed Smith to round the keeper and tap in. Gillett then replaced Wigley and we saw the game out until a moment of madness lead to their keeper being sent off with about 20 minutes to go after wiping out Smithy. Wigley then came back on for man of the match Saunders and the rout was finished thanks to an excellent free kick from Eamonn which was powered home by a Woodman header.
A great performance by the whole team. Lee had nothing to do in goal bar one fantastic save near the end of the first half. Rob Wigley marshalled the defence and played the offside trap perfectly. The returning Eamonn showed why he is the pillar of the side and made a great return, the wingers worked very hard but were unrewarded with any goals which they deserved. The midfield engine worked very well and the strikers continued to keep up their usual high standards. Billy got man of the match for his best performance in a Reigate shirt and his goal of the season contender.
