vs Summer Festival of Football FCL Junior FC

Away tournament match

Our first venture into tournament football at the Foots Cray Lions Junior FC Summer Festival of Football at Ivor Grove in New Eltham.

The U12 format was two groups of 6 teams playing 9-a-side 12 minute games followed by play-offs for all positions. However, on arrival we were informed that one team had pulled out of our group so we were to play one less group game but playing time was increased to 15 minutes to ensure we maintained our overall playing time.

Once we had the fixture list to hand we then noted that all the teams we were due to play were either League A or B teams so we knew we were in for a tough tournament.

Our first game was against Petts Wood Swallows and the overall stats showed that they must have had 7 or 8 shots on target but we failed to muster 1. Thanks to a sterling performance by Brandon in goal we held them to a goalless draw to get our first point of the tournament.

The second game was against Dulwich Village FC which at times looked like a trailer for the film Land of The Giants. Not sure what they feed them on in Dulwich but some of their players were twice the size of ours. We struggled to get into the game and lost 3-0.

Next up were Foots Cray Lions Yellow and although this was a more evenly matched game we still couldn't find the back of the net and lost 2-0.

The final group game was against Beckenham Town Whites who are a strong League A team and ran out 3-0 winners.

Onto the play-off games and we played Foots Cray Lions Black and got off to a flying start as Gino scored a great goal after a minutes play. This was quickly followed up by Luke scoring a second to give us our first goals and first win in the tournament with a 2-0 victory.

The final game of the day for us was against League B team Beckenham Town Blues who edged a close game with a late winner to give them a 1-0 victory.

So our final stats from the 6 games played were 1 win, 1 draw and 4 defeats to give us 4 points in all. Bearing in mind the standard of the opposition we were up against the boys did very well on an extremely hot and sunny day.
