Home league match
Orpington Athletic put on an unenthusiastic performance this weekend against Petts Wood Black Vultures and were fortunate to walk away with all 3 points. Despite a memorable goal for Mike Adamou and a debut winner for Gordson Agard, Orpington were flat and unable to finish off some gilt-edged opportunities.
In an uneventful first half, Orpington did not find a rhythm and looked half asleep. Despite a couple of early, tentative attempts on goal, they were cut open and had Vultures had their shooting boots on, the match could have taken a different path.
In the second half, Orpington made 3 subs, in an attempt to fire the team up and get them on the attack. Adamou struck early on with a precise volley into the top corner, and 10 minutes later, Agard rose tallest in the box to head home Blyghton's pinpoint corner.
However, the game became stop-start again and the intensity didn't build. Vultures found a goal following a goal mouth scramble that wasn't cleared in time and threatened to push on. Fowler stood out as he pushed to press the young side, but there wasn't enough from the rest of the team.
Orpington would have felt aggrieved at the referee's determination not to award some very clear fouls by Vultures, but Orpington did not help themselves by failing to finish at least 2 laid on goals. Firstly, Kode hitting the crossbar in a one-on-one situation, followed by Braithwaite placing wide of an empty net.
Despite the odds not being in Orpington's favour, they tied up the match and secured the points. A week's rest before facing the Vultures again, away from home, will hopefully be enough to rally the team and get them playing the kind of football that has got them to the top of the table.
