Home league match

Orpington Athletic inflicted a first league defeat on Lions United this weekend with a dominant and battling display. With goals shared across the attacking line, Orpington gave Lions their first real test of the season as the contest for first and second heated up.

Following a somber and down hearted performance in last weekend's cup match, Orpington were a different prospect as they set about Lions from the off. Leaving themselves exposed at the back allowed Lions to take the early lead, but the composed Ben Blyghton had the team back on level terms within a couple of minutes. A flicked header from a Lions defender fell to Blyghton who calmly controlled the ball and thundered a volley into the roof of the net.

Orpington had to be cautious of Lions' attacking threat, and were constantly aware of the pace possessed by the rapid winger. Lions utilised this outlet and took the lead again, only for Tejiri Kode to bring the scores level again before half time.

In the second half, Orpington were battle hardened and displays from the imperious Harry Utton, the unflappable Terry Fowler and the unyielding duo of Braithwaite and Haden in the middle, were a constant thorn in the Lion's paw, breaking up numerous periods of play and attempted attacks.

Mike Adamou gave Orpington the lead after 50 minutes with a deft, first time finish off of Downs' cutback. Adamou was booked for his resulting celebrations; displaying a heartfelt message under his shirt to Anthony Knott.

Lions found a response as they headed in their third; a header from a set piece, but Kode broke the Lions' back line on the hour mark and finished under the 'keeper at the near post. Once again, Lions found a response, but it would be for the last time.

With 15 minutes remaining, substitute Oral Graham, pounced on a defensive mistake and managed to bundle home Orpington's fifth and retake the lead. And with 2 minutes remaining, Alex Wright, making his long awaited return, charged down the right wing and coolly chipped the ball over the on rushing 'keeper to put the game beyond doubt.

At the final whistle, celebrations were loud and euphoric as Orpington came away with a hard fought victory. The two top teams in the league will likely continue their respective challenges as the season draws to a close. Who will take the title - only time will tell.
