Orpington Athletic were victims of their own inability to convert opportunities, as they fell to an embarrassing 4-0 loss to Interfecta FC this weekend. Despite almost a dozen chances presenting themselves, Orpington missed every single one and were undone by some quick, counter attacking play by Interfecta.
With a top 4 place at stake, the first in the club’s history, Orpington would have been expected to take this game by the scruff of the neck and put Interfecta to the sword. However, a bare 11 once again took the field and with no subs and no support, the team looked to impact against a well organised opposition.
Orpington had a multitude of chances in the first half, with defender, Austin Facer, coming closest from long range. A well struck, curling shot towards the bottom corner was only just palmed away by the Interfecta ‘keeper. The opposition also had a few chances to find the net, but some heroic goalkeeping by Utton, kept the score line goalless.
At half time, Utton slightly altered the positioning of his men and the second half followed a similar pattern. Orpington could, and should, have been out of sight, spurning 3 gilt edged chances. Interfecta absorbed the onslaught and were quick to break down the right hand side, the resultant cross leading to the first goal of the game.
A second almost followed immediately, save for a last ditch goal line clearance, however the heroics in the box were short lived and Interfecta found the net shortly after the hour mark. Orpington continued to press and both Mike Adamou and Lee Cordner came close to pulling goals back. Interfecta however produced another swift counter attack and a ball into the box eluded the head of stand-in centre back, Terry Fowler, leading to a third goal for the home team.
Fowler was unfortunate to suffer a blow to the ankle and had to leave the field with just over 10 minutes to play, and Interfecta exploited the man advantage to score the fourth and final goal of the game.
A despondent Orpington left the field and will rightly need to reassess before taking on top 4 rivals, Lions United next Sunday. With their final league position still in their own hands for now, Orpington will need to pull out two great, final performances of the season and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with, especially as they prepare to build for the 2019/20 season.
