Away league match

A solid team performance from Orpington saw them record a third clean sheet of the season against league leaders, Hayward’s FC and secure a scoreless draw. The game also saw the return of David Martin in the red and black stripes, following a long term absence.

In a game of few clear cut chances, Orpington found rhythm on the pitch and were able to play a more expansive passing style of play. The opening exchanges between the teams produced few efforts on goal, however, Orpington could have taken the lead when Tom Braithwaite produced a fine overhead flick to set himself up to volley, only to see his effort sail over the top of the crossbar.

Orpington exuded composure on the ball, with both full backs, Tom Connell and Zubair Akhtar in particular producing ‘man-of-the-match-worthy’ performances. At half time, it remained scoreless.

Orpington produced more quality in the second half, with the best chance to break the deadlock falling to skipper, Rob Utton. Tom Smart’s quick free kick over the top of the Hayward’s defence was met by the outstretched, right boot of Utton, however the ball was cannoned directly into the ‘keeper, who recovered well to make a second block on the rebound. Utton was soon after involved in another great opportunity, when Connell broke with pace down the left hand side and cut the ball back to the edge of the box for Utton to shoot. The resultant effort was just inches wide of the upright.

Further efforts were created and Orpington could have taken the lead on a few occasions. Hayward’s produced a fine effort which found its way into the back of the net, however the ball was called back for an offside decision.

The game finished with neither team able to break each other down and the draw was perhaps a fair result. Orpington will feel that their recent poor results can be forgotten about and can now focus on solidifying their position in the top half of the table.
