Home league match
Orpington produced a magnificent performance to beat the league leaders, Green Street Green, 2-0 at the weekend. A first half brace from the in-form Mike Adamou was enough to secure the result and lift morale following a recent run of disappointing results.
Orpington have suffered in recent weeks and manager, Matt Utton, opted to dramatically shift the focus and set-up of his team for this match. Moving to a 4-2-3-1 formation, Utton deployed Austin Facer and Dean De Cabral in the central defensive positions, ahead of the back four, with instructions to command the middle of the park and nullify the opposition attack. The instructions were put into effect in fine style, with Facer and De Cabral both putting in sterling performances.
Up front, Adamou resumed his lone striker position, however with the support of the three, free-roam attacking midfielders behind him, he could find more space and time to create the opportunities. After a solid defensive start, Orpington pushed up the field and a fine move was rounded off with a pass by new signing, Lee Cordner, into the feet of Adamou who picked out the bottom corner with a fantastic strike.
Orpington did not relent in their tenacity and were rewarded again on the half hour. A long pass from the back of the field by Rob Utton was perfectly controlled by Adamou who lifted his shot over the advancing keeper and scored the second of the match. Further first half chances were created and Downs almost produced a goal of the season when his volley flew just wide of the post. Cordner was also unlucky to see his thunderous volley blocked in the box.
No changes were made at half time and Orpington continued in the same vain. Adamou continuously found pockets of space and without the use of conventional wingers, the attack could create neat, tidy passages of play. The defence was put under pressure on occasion and GSG were able to fashion a few opportunities, however, the back line was solid in their approach and quelled all that was thrown at them. The communication and drive shown by every player was a refreshing sight and the fighting spirit to win every ball was evidence of a team playing for one another.
At the final whistle, the jubilation was evident and Orpington were thoroughly deserving winners. Utton commented at the end that the performance was “close to faultless”. With a new structure and a renewed belief, this result should give Orpington the confidence they need to end the season in a strong position.
Orpington’s next match is at home to Interfecta FC on Sunday 8th April. Tickets on general sale.
