vs Bayer Neverlusen
Home league match
Orpington Athletic were unable to test the league leaders, Bayer Neverlusen, this weekend, as multiple injuries and no-shows left the team at a disadvantage from the start. Manager, Matt Utton, only had 10 players available to field and with the likes of Dean De Cabral, Austin Facer and Harry Utton all held together by strong tape, this was always going to be an uphill battle.
Orpington were industrious in their approach and allowed Neverlusen to retain possession, pressing only when necessary and finding space in the final third of the pitch. There were early opportunities to take what would have been a surprising lead, with both Adamou and Blyghton linking up - a regular occurrence in Orpington's season.
Orpington held firm, restricted chances and De Cabral was especially effective at full back in stifling Neverlusen's winger. However, a cutting pass through the back line was run onto by the Neverlusen attacker and he made the most of Utton's misjudged contact in the box. The referee awarded the penalty, which was dispatched well.
Neverlusen, perhaps a little against the run of play, were able to double their lead just before half time, when a cross into the box was poorly defended and scrambled home by Neverlusen's number 9.
The second half played out in much the same way as the first. Orpington held their own and were able to stave off waves of attacks, with Utton making some outstanding saves, but tiredness eventually crept in and Neverlusen scored a third and a fourth in the latter stages of the half.
In a game that could have been a lot different with a full strength team, Orpington could leave the field with their pride in tact at least. The ten men had worked for each other, dug in and produced a commendable performance. If not for the performance and the result, the '10' ratings across the team were fully merited for the attitude, effort and endeavour.
Orpington now look forward to a run of 3 home games against sides lower than them in the league, and will need to be careful not to become complacent. The performance today will need to be replicated and with a full strength team, they should believe that they can overcome any adversary.
