Away league match
Orpington Athletic succumbed to their second 8-1 loss of the season at the hands of a dynamic and ruthless Bayer Neverlusen. With few positives to be taken from an overwhelmingly one-sided match, there will be need to be a quick change in form to ensure Orpington's season does not derail before it has even begun.
Neverlusen had already dismantled Haywards FC in their first league game of the season, coming away 8-0 victors and they aimed to continue that ferocity into this match. Orpington started the game well enough and had it not been for a fine save from the opposition 'keeper, could have taken an early lead when Tom Braithwaite's long range strike almost found the bottom corner.
Neverlusen responded in kind, however their long range effort beat Matt Utton in goal, perfectly picking out the top corner. A second followed with a neatly tucked away effort into the far corner, with the third before half time, a neat chip over Utton into the empty net.
With a depleted squad and a lack of options from the bench, Utton was left with little choice but to start the second half with the same line-up. Again staring well and slightly more composed, Orpington had another chance to pull a goal back when Joe Haden's shot cannoned off the crossbar. Undeterred, Neverlusen replied and goals 3 more goals arrived, putting the game far beyond the reach of a tiring Orpington. Losing Harry Utton to a chest injury after a collision with the upright, George Butler made his return to the first team following a recent knee injury.
After Neverlusen increased their tally to 7 from the spot, Ben Blyghton made an excellent, trademark dribble to the by-line, cutting back for Butler to finish at the near post with a tidy and composed strike. Neverlusen wrapped the game up with a fine solo effort and the game was seen out.
Orpington return home next weekend for a rematch against Bromley Road, who they beat in the corresponding away tie. Hopefully, the result today can be quickly learned from and a vastly improved performance produced in 7 days' time.
