Home league match

Orpington were unlucky to lose to the league leaders this weekend by a one goal margin, which was achieved through a deliberately handled effort by a Bromley Road player.

Orpington’s form towards the end of this season has been commendable and they have not looked out of place against the supposed ‘better’ teams in the division. Lacking players through injury or absence, Manager Matt Utton once again set up with Harry Utton anchoring between defence and midfield, however opted for Calum Jamieson and Zubair Akhtar as full backs, with Anthony Knott joining captain, Rob Utton at centre back. A strong midfield of Butler, Adamou, Haden and Hart supported Downs as a lone striker.

Orpington were tested early on after a bright start from Bromley Road, who were looking to cement their position at the top of Division 3, however, Orpington were able to put an equal amount of pressure on their opponent’s back line and held firm in defence. However, on the half hour, Orpington somewhat gifted an opportunity to Bromley, as a throw in across the back line was pounced upon, driven to the corner and cut back for a simple tap in.

It has become a rarity in recent games for Orpington to capitulate and this was evident as they regrouped and forced further attacks. Their deserved equaliser came after some good work down the right hand side, freeing Hart to deliver a brilliant cross to the awaiting Downs who uted his effort superbly without the need for an additional touch. Moments later though, the defining moment of the game came when a scrambled effort into Orpington’s box was surreptitiously clawed over the line by the hand of the Bromley Road attacker. Incensed by the blatant indiscretion, Orpington remonstrated with the referee, however the goal was given and Bromley led 2-1 at half time.

No changes were made at half time and Orpington went on to dominate the second half. In the moments when Bromley were able to mount an attack and shot on target, ‘keeper Matt Utton was unbeatable and made some fantastic stops, reminiscent of a vintage David James. Utton moved to bring on Braithwaite to support Downs in the attack, and the pair linked well, coming close on two or three occasions. New signing King also came on to make an impact and gave Orpington and additional outlet by switching the play across the field. As the half wore on, Bromley were penned back and looked rightly nervous at the prospect of conceding, however Orpington could not make the pressure pay and came away with no points.

Orpington’s focus must now be to secure an away win (something they have not achieved all season) in their final game of the season, next Sunday, against A.F.C Coney Hall to ensure their form is reflected in a result. Following that, there has to be a real drive through pre-season to improve, enhance and build on what they appear to be working very hard for. This Orpington team is ready to compete and opponents should be wary of their continued growth and ambition.
