Away league match
The stones made 2 changes from last week with Louis Bradbury and Jake Burton coming into the side in an attacking line up. However it was Rye who started the brighter and could've easily taken an early lead. On the half hour mark the stones took the lead against the run of play when good work on the left wing by Hand led to Burton finishing well from inside the 18 yard box. The stones couldn't kick on from this and within 5 mins Rye were level and then took a deserved 2-1 lead, with the stones all at sea Rye would've extended their lead but for an excellent goal line clearance from Parry and an outstanding save by Saunders that would prove to be a big moment in the match. With half time looming Hand drove into the Rye penalty area and was bought down clumsily. Penalty. Dave Pugh stepped up and calmly converted for his 1st of the season. HT 2-2.
The stones made 1 change at HT with Loukas Bradbury coming on for Burton. The change of shape paid instant dividends when Irving's throw found Pugh who fed the on rushing Bradbury who rounded one defender and finished via a deflection. The stones lead lasted all of 2 mins as Rye broke down their right and a cross found an unmarked Rye forward who volleyed home well for 3-3. With just over 20 minutes remaining Hand was bought down 25 yards from goal. Pugh stepped up and curled the ball perfectly over the wall and into the top bin for an early goal of the season contender. 4-3. A couple of minutes later the stones extended the lead with some nice attacking play that led to Bourne finishing neatly from the edge of the box. Chances at both ends followed with Saunders making another fantastic save and Davies going close at the other end. The game finished on a high when a long ball from Saunders found Davies who's first touch was immaculate, he then turned and fed the overlapping Cusden who out muscled the covering defender to finish well at the near post. An excellent 2nd half with lots of good individual performances.
This weeks MoM sponsored by EyeDream goes to Jon Saunders for some outstanding goalkeeping at key moments.
