A difficult week of Cup matches against Premier Division opposition saw a, again, heavily depleted Burgh side missing 8 potential starters come up against Tynecastle at the impressive Meggetland Stadium, Edinburgh.

Many were feeling apprehensive after the Oakley game, but it was a much different story this time round with a much improved, battling display with the game only put out of reach late in the game.

The pattern of the game did remain similar to the game on Saturday with the Premier League side dominating possession, but the defensive unit – containing a debutant goalkeeper and a makeshift line up put in a sterling performance and keeper Chalmers put in a very impressive display coming to the rescue of Burgh on numerous occasions.

In the 17th minute he showed his cat-like prowess coming to the rescue of a short backpass to save at the feet of a Tynecastle striker, as well as a spectacular save from Cameron’s volley on 26 minutes.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 32nd minute when Ponton beat the advancing keeper to the ball and poke the ball in off the far post. There was a break in play when Chalmers showed his bravery diving at the feet of a striker and appeared to break his nose in the 41st minute. After lengthy treatment, he showed his strength and saw out the rest of the game.

It was still one way traffic for the home side, but a combination of Chalmers, or great tackles from Josh Doyle, stand-in skipper Davie Byrne or Harris Mitchell kept Burgh in the game.

The game was finally put out of Burgh’s reach in the 69th minute when a cross from the right was powered home by the head of substitute Hamilton from close range. The move was replicated in the 82nd minute when it was Weir who was on hand to power a header home at the far post to make it 3-0.

Whilst Burgh never really looked like threatening the scoring against opponents from two divisions above them, it was a battling, hard-working performance all over the park with Struan Grieve and Calum Anderson working hard in the middle of the park, Stevenson and Harper trying to help provide some respite on the flanks.

Despite the two defeats to higher-level opposition, this performance offered a lot more heart and encouragement.
