Away league match

Burgh travelled to Stirling University with hopes of recording a second win against opposition they had beaten last season. There were two changes, both in defence with Struan Grieve absent and Josh Doyle was a late withdrawal in the starting eleven.

It was a disappointing opening 45 minutes which effectively gave the points to Stirling with slack defending.

The opening goal came in the 12th minute for Hayes to tap home from close range after being previously denied moments earlier by David Chalmers. Hayes could have had a hat-trick in the opening 15 minutes when he latched onto a long ball but again Chalmers came to the rescue. Craig Hislop also had a chance in the 16th minute but Chalmers bravely dived at the number 11’s feet as he attempted to go round.

Preston made it 2-0 for the hosts in the 19th minute with a low shot from the edge of the area which went through a crowd of bodies and low into the corner. It was a poor goal to give away.

Kellar Harris had the Burgh’s first chance in the 22nd minute when a ball from Michael Perrie was slid through and his rasping drive went into the side netting. That was Harris’s last action as he left the field in discomfort a few minutes later.

Stirling were looking the sharper in the opening 45 minutes and had another couple of chances from Craig Hislop and Robertson before they found their third goal with MacIvor enjoying the space at the far post as the home side had about 30 seconds with 3 vs. 2 on the left flank. Burgh didn’t plug that gap quick enough and MacIvor fired home from close range.

The second half saw an improved and more even display from Burgh, but they never seriously looked like turning the game around. Calum Anderson went close with a looping effort in the 49th minute and Luis O’Rourke’s hard-working and running got him a good chance on 71 minutes but he couldn’t keep his effort down.

Anderson had another effort following a ball from a corner on the edge of the box but he couldn’t get over the ball to get his shot on target. Burgh struggled to seriously test the home keeper and Stirling ran out deserved winners.
