Home league match

The Burgh were back at East Shore Park for their penultimate home game of the season for a tense battle with Ormiston Primrose with buoyed by an impressive 2-1 win at Thornton Hibs in midweek.

Newburgh were missing top scorer Kellar Harris through the injury sustained last Saturday against Easthouses Lily so Cai Macdonald returned up front alongside Jamie Fyfe.

It was Macdonald who had the game’s first chance in the 5th minute but his looping header went wide of the far post, whilst Michael Perrie couldn’t make a good connection with a volley over the Ormiston crossbar.

Gilfillan tested David Chalmer’s gloves in the 26th minute, whilst a wayward shot from Maxwell kept Club Treasurer Jack on his toes whilst working the canteen as it crashed through the kitchen window moments later!

The visitors took the lead in the 31st minute following a corner from the left that was flicked home from close range by Underhill. At the other end, Jamie Fyfe had a low shot from the edge of the area heading to the corner saved by Gordon.

Ormiston full-back Nichol was allowed inside and to get a shot away in the 54th minute but Chalmers was more than equal to it. Ronan Hall then weaved his way into the visitors penalty area but the ball was cleared before the Burgh no.8 could get his shot away.

In the 72nd minute Hamid Eddouss joined half time sub Calum Anderson to add to Burgh’s attacking options chasing that elusive equaliser, whilst Perrie saw a header wide in the 76th minute.

It was largely all Burgh at this stage but they couldn’t break through a stubborn Ormiston defence with Anderson having an effort over and then a Hall shot was blocked causing a brief moment of panic in the visitors defence before the ball was hacked clear a few yards from goal.

In injury time Newburgh got a free kick in an attacking position with a last chance but Harris Mitchell’s effort was pushed around for a corner.

It was a disappointing result for a Burgh against a resilient Ormiston side who saw this as a massive three points to take them out of the relegation places at the expense of Craigroyston. But it sets up Burgh for a tense couple of games with trips to the bottom two sides which we simply cannot afford to drop points at.
