Burgh returned to the John Brydson Arena, Oriam, for a second visit of the season following the unfortunate abandonment back in November. Sadly, it was not an enjoyable return to class as a strong Heriot-Watt side dished out a tough lesson to another set of visitors.
From early on the home side was dominant and a rasping shot from outside the area was tipped over by David Chalmers in the 9th minute. It was going to be a busy evening for the Burgh keeper who did his best to keep the scores down with several good saves.
The breakthrough finally came in the 30th minute when Ciaran Mayne’s stretching tackle just inside the area was adjusted a foul and Hogg stepped up from the penalty to give Heriot-Watt the lead.
It was largely one-way traffic as the home side made the use of a big pitch and Hogg had another chance with a shot from an angle just over the bar in the 38th minute.
Moments later it was Chalmers to the rescue again when he brilliantly dived on a close-range header from Domyil who was only about 5 yards out. On the stroke of half time, it was the same combination from the Heriot-Watt no.9 fired a drive into the near top corner but the keeper was at full stretch to push behind for a corner.
In the 49th minute Smith was neatly played through and he poked the ball past Chalmers into the corner for the second. 2-0 nearly became 3-0 in the 58th minute when Domyil tapped home from close range after a shot had cannoned off the post, but was ruled out for offside.
The third goal wasn’t long coming, though, Domyil again waltzed his way past Chalmers and defence to send a pass onto a plate to sub Stewart to tap home from close range.
At this stage the Burgh collapsed with the 2nd goal in a six minute spell coming in the 62nd minute when Heriot-Watt again cut through the Burgh defence like a hot knife through butter and Hogg netted his second with a clever chip over the advancing Chalmers.
Chalmers did well to block a shot from Cristea through on goal with the rebound sent over the bar. It was a brief respite as goal number 5 came as Stewart slid a ball through to McCreadie who rolled home into the far corner.
It was a disappointing and tough lesson from a very good and strong Heriot-Watt side chasing promotion, but with hopefully a few missing players available for this Saturday’s crunch game with Ormiston which is a more important fixture.
