Home league match
The 2021/22 season ended with a home match, in front of a bumper crowd on Sponsors Day, with visitors Glenrothes having much riding on the game with the title race an exciting last-day-three-horse-race.
Last weekend, the Glens annihilated Easthouses 10-0 to make a statement of their intentions and early fears of a repeat were on the cards as early as the 4th minute when Grierson headed home a corner to give the title-chasers the lead.
But Glenrothes weren’t going to get everything handed to them on a plate and the ever-growing Burgh defence showed their resurgence and strength to weather any storm.
Sam Kirkham had the Burgh’s first chance in the 20th minute when he rose the highest to head a right wing corner just past the post.
At the other end, keeper Calum Sutherland was the busier of the keepers with a low save in the 29th minute before he was called into action to brilliantly dive low to his right to push away a penalty heading for the corner in the 31st minute. Three minutes later, the Burgh stopper pulled off another very good double save.
The visitors did break the Burgh resistance again in the 48th minute with a well-taken long range strike from Bell.
Substitute Andrew Reade came close to pulling a goal back in the 64th minute when he forced the Glenrothes keeper to save for a corner from close range.
Glenrothes missed a couple of good chances before they finally scored a third through Cargill in the 90th minute, but by then word had already filtered through that their valiant title bid had been unsuccessful as Oakley had scored a 72nd minute goal to claim the title at Edinburgh South, whilst Preston also recorded a 3-1 victory at home to Lochgelly Albert meaning the top 3 maintained their finishing positions as the start of the day with Oakley winning the Conference B title by that solitary point from both Glenrothes, who finished in 2nd place, and Preston – who both tied on 63 points.
Commiserations to Glenrothes (and indeed Preston), whilst Congratulations to Oakley United.
