Away league match

Newburgh travelled for a rare Sunday fixture at the home of Edinburgh South, who are ground-sharing with Dalkeith Thistle, at picturesque King’s Park.

It was the first of four games against sides closer in the table to Newburgh after a tough run of League games, ended by a home and away encounter with Preston Athletic and hopefully a chance to get a break in the bad luck of a side that are trying very hard and making progress, despite the results.

The first half was one of few chances, with Michael Perrie firing a shot wide of the post on 13 minutes, and Andrew Reade sweep a low ball into the side netting after good work from Perrie and Aiden Jones on the left wing.

The home side took the lead in the 35th minute Martin was through on goal and he slotted low into the far corner past Mark Robertson. David Byrne went close in the 40th minute with a lobbed effort that just cleared the crossbar.

The Burgh came out of the blocks quickly in the second half with Andrew Reade having a shot blocked, before the goal of the game in the 51st minute from Rory Marshall. Reade had been fouled about 8 yards outside the Edinburgh South penalty area, Marshall stepped up to float a left foot shot spectacularly into the top corner of the net to give Burgh a deserved equaliser.

The joy was short-lived though as Martin put the hosts back ahead in the 64th minute after Ndiwemi’s shot had been blocked from close range and Martin side-footed home the rebound.

Things were getting tense both on the sidelines and on the pitch with a few risky tackles and heated words. After an incident inside the Edinburgh half late on, Lewis Caulfield got involved with a heated discussion with an opponent which the match official took exception to and dismissed the Burgh sub.

A disappointing result for the Burgh who should have got more out of the game. We pick ourselves up again, dust ourselves down and hope for a little bit of overdue Lady Luck as we travel to the Borders on Saturday to play Hawick Royal Albert United.
