Home league match
The Burgh returned to action after a 2-week break with a difficult task of the visit of Dalkeith Thistle to East Shore Park.
Whilst the visitors were worthy of their goals, had the hosts been a bit more clinical with their chances, it could have been a very different picture at full time with the final score not showing a true reflection of the game.
Connall White came to the rescue in the 7th minute when he blocked a shot from D Leslie for a corner, whilst in the 23rd minute Russell picked up on the rebound from a 50/50 with keeper David Chalmers to waste a good chance and send his shot wide of an exposed goal.
The miss was a very brief respite as Brockie slid home the opener on 24 minutes, whilst the Burgh had a good chance when an effort hit the post (apologies I didn’t see whose effort it was) and then new boy Ewan Strang rattled the crossbar in the 27th minute.
Cai Macdonald had a good chance shooting just wide of the near post a few moments later before Burrows slid in from close range to extend the ‘Jags’ advantage from a low ball into the box in the 32nd minute. Whilst Michael Perrie flicked a header just wide from a free kick shortly after.
Burgh started the second half brighter with a dangerous ball across goal was flicked behind for a corner, with Andrew Cameron heading the resultant corner over.
In the 58th minute Jamie Fyfe had a diving header from point blank range brilliantly saved with Perrie unable to get his feet correct to force the rebound home. Fyfe made way for Kellar Harris moments later as the Burgh top scorer eases his way back from injury. Harris made an almost immediate contribution rising well to win a header and lay it into Macdonald’s path on the edge of the area but the Burgh no.7 couldn’t quite find the target.
Then Harris showed his talent by perfectly beating the offside trap to latch onto a through ball but he was unable to keep his first time shot down and it went over the bar.
Dalkeith put the game to bed in the 75th minute when a high ball into the Burgh box caused confusion as Chalmers and Cameron collided in the keeper’s attempt to collect and Brockie was left with the easy task to tap home for 3-0.
In the 79th minute it was four when sub Lennie was left unmarked to head home a corner from close range to hammer home the final nail in the coffin.
It was a disappointing result for the Burgh and one that could have turned out differently had the defence eradicated errors, whilst the chances that went Burgh’s way were finished more clinically.
The Burgh are on a poor run of form at moment and that understandably is affecting confidence, but there are still shoots of optimism. Sharper scoring boots and a bit of ‘Lady Luck’ and things could be a lot more positive. A good result is much needed and will hopefully do wonders for morale and what better opportunity than the next game – we welcome Edinburgh United to East Shore Park next Saturday (kick off 2pm).
