The best performance of the season so far against strong, determined and well-organised opponents who at kick off were sitting at the top of the league.
Another outstanding display at the back, with goalkeeper Eliasz Zalewski and the Back 4 of Kyle McPhee, David Fiado, Ali Fadaaq and Tom Rodriguez posting another clean sheet - they have now only conceded 7 goals in the 9 league games to date. Ali Fadaaq, strong in defence and confident on the ball, gave his best performance so far while Kyle McPhee had to make a great goalline clearance in the first half with the score at 0-0.
The game, however, was won in midfield where skipper Johnny Greenwood and Youcef Narbesla - together for the first time since playing in the Reserves in 2023 - were outstanding throughout, well supported by Nabil Al Humaidi and Abdulmajeed Alqadhi. Confidence on the ball, ability to go past opponents, linkage with the Back 4, positive passing - and determined pressing and tackling - were the trademarks of a dominant midfield display.
Abdulmajeed Alqadhi opened the scoring before the interval from Joe Martin’s pass but from then it took lots of hard work to break down committed opponents. Abdul Alsahar bundled in the important second goal after Zoro had hit the bar and this was quickly followed by Andrea Ekuase - looking sharp throughout - adding a third from Tom Rodriguez’s assist. Following a fluent move near the end, Abdul Alsahar’s pinpoint cross was knocked into his own net by an under pressure defender.
A highly satisfactory victory - but we still have to maintain performances like today’s to win the league.
Team: Zalewski; McPhee, Fiado, Fadaaq, Rodriguez (Alsahar), Greenwood, Al Humaidi, Narbesla; Alqadhi, Martin (A. Ahmad), Ekuase.
