vs Coonagh FC

Home league match

A fine Thursday evening brought a strong support out to Brickfields to cheer on the First team last night. Nenagh were looking to take all the positives from the previous games and put on a good performance for the home support.

Nenagh possessed most of the ball in the early exchanges and were trying to figure out a way to carve open a sticky Coonagh side. There was little defending for Nenagh to do as Coonagh seemed to lack a threat, a lot of this down to a strong defensive display by the Nenagh defensive unit.

Nenagh had a few chances but failed to put the ball in the back of the net. The home side were made to rue their missed opportunities as on the half hour mark Coonagh took the lead through a wonder strike as their No.9 took the ball on his chest while turning before volleying the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. A fantastic goal and a wake up call for the lads.

A very prompt response followed as within 2 minutes of the Coonagh goal Adam Ryan played an incredible pass to Matthew Spain who made no mistake as he rounded the keeper with his 1st touch before knocking the ball into the net past a recovering defender. Following the goal there was relentless pressure on the Coonagh goal including a free kick from Szymon Popiela that struck the post. A rightful lead eventually came as after 39 minutes as Dylan Morrison smashed the ball home following a goalmouth scramble. Nenagh had a deserved 2-1 lead at the break.

The second half differed very little from the first as all of the ball was played in the Coonagh half. Nenagh created a number of changes again but failed to put the ball in the net. Coonagh had a few counter attacks but never troubled the Nenagh goal. As the game crept into the late stages and the score remaining at 2-1 there was a small bit of unease amongst the support and players as Nenagh kept failing to capitalise on any of their big chances.

All nerves were put to rest as substitute Kieran O Brien smashed home a 3rd goal in the 80th minute for the dominant Nenagh side. The game was put beyond doubt as Matthew Spain grabbed his 2nd of the night on 83 minutes. The final whistle brought the game to a close with a score of 4-1.

A fantastic win for the lads and the quality and depth of the squad has been on show with 18 different players being used in 7 days of the league beginning.
