In a thrilling league encounter at Ten Acre Field on 5th October 2024, Moreton Hall Raiders secured a less than convincing 3-1 victory against Ely City Crusaders U14 White. The match kicked off at 9:30 am, showcasing a spirited performance from both sides.
Moreton Hall Raiders lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, Zak Leighton took his position as the goalkeeper, shielded by a back four consisting of Oscar Kobylecki on the right, Taylor Parker on the left, and the central defensive duo of Jacob Thrower and Kingsley Cook. Fenton Arnold operated as the lone central midfielder, tasked with linking play between defence and attack. The attacking midfield featured Aiden Fulcher on the right, Gilbert and Deeks in the central roles, and Joseph Hawes on the left, while Harry Ambrose led the line as the striker. The substitutes for the match included Callum Clarke, Jack Hurrell, Hugo Andrews, and Heston Andrews.
The match began with Ely looking the better side and the Raiders looking sleepy!
Moreton Hall Raiders made early changes in the 17th min as Callum Clarke replaced Finley Deeks and Jack Hurrell replaced Joseph Hawes. Moments later, Aiden Fulcher converted a penalty in the bottom left corner, putting the Raiders ahead after being fouled in the box. This goal came at a crucial time, as it not only boosted the team's morale but also set the tone for the first half.
Zak Leighton, the Raiders' goalkeeper, was called into action shortly after, making a full-stretch save in the 20th minute to deny the Crusaders an equaliser. He showcased his shot-stopping ability again in the 30th minute, executing another full-stretch save to keep the scoreline intact.
In the 34th minute, Moreton Hall Raiders were awarded another penalty, and Taylor Parker stepped up to convert it, extending their lead to 2-0.
Following the half time break and a dressing down from the manager, the Raiders made three changes with Joseph Hawes coming back on and the Andrews brothers entering the fray.
In the 40th min Zak Leighton made another crucial point-blank reaction save from a corner, however Ely City Crusaders knocked in the rebound. With the score now at 2-1 it was backs to the wall for the RAIDERS.
In the 50th minute, Hugo Andrews made a key pass sliding the ball through to Hurrell who rounded the keeper but was forced wide by some last ditch defending.
Despite a couple of missed opportunities, including attempts from Finley Deeks and Joseph Hawes that went high, the Raiders continued to press forward. In the 62nd minute, Joseph Hawes found the back of the net with a well-placed left-footed shot, following a powerful run and brilliant pass from Hurrell, restoring the two-goal cushion for Moreton Hall Raiders at 3-1.
The match concluded with Moreton Hall Raiders holding firm to their lead. Zak Leighton’s standout performance in goal earned him the Player of the Match accolade, as he played a pivotal role in securing the victory for his team.
