The RAIDERS kicked off 2023 with a home fixture against Bury Town Colts…. AGAIN!
The fixture has turned into somewhat of a local rivalry, albeit not so much for the players and more so for the coaches and parents!
The previous two games showed that Bury are not quite at our level fitness wise or technically, however having not played for 4 weeks I wasn’t 100% sure how the RAIDERS would play against a physical Bury.
The game started as a cagey affair with Bury sitting very deep and getting all 9 players behind the ball. We were limited to mainly long range efforts… luckily for us we have several players who are cable of scoring from anywhere!
The opening goal was a screamer from Taylor Parker who cut in from the left wing and hit a ferocious right footed drive from outside the box into the far right hand corner. No keeper would have saved it, not even Jack Butland now on loan at United from Palace ;)
We went into the break 1-0 up although it could have been several more with Gooderham hitting the bar twice and Everard rounding the keeper to put his shot inches wide.
Bury came out the blocks fast for the second half but any opportunities they had were either blocked or well saved by Zach in goal. In truth Bury didn’t seem likely to beat a defence who have kept 4 clean sheets in a row in all competitions.
The second half we much better. Deeks was winning everything in midfield, Barrett was running rings about their defenders & Everard was too powerful to contain.
The second goal came from Barrett on the right with a hard low cross deflected into the goal from a Bury Defender. The very least he deserved from a truly magnificent second half performance.
Deeks scored the third and then turned provider with a cross to Hugo Andrews who volleyed home the 4th (following an overhead kick that gave us all a good laugh).
A good day at the office with Clare up next. Thank you all for coming and supporting the team, we appreciate you all.
