Home league match
In a disappointing league encounter at Litherland Sports Park on 16 August 2025, Litherland Remyca Res fell to a 3-0 defeat against Newton. The match, which kicked off at 2:00pm, saw the visitors dominate the proceedings, leaving the home side with much to ponder as they look to improve in future fixtures.
Litherland lined up in a 4-1-2-3 formation, designed to provide a solid defensive base while allowing for attacking flair. Josh Cockrey took his position in goal, shielded by a back four consisting of Thomas Frost on the right, Sam Kearney and Michael McDonald in central defence, and Paul Cliff on the left. Callum Moffatt operated as the lone central midfielder, tasked with linking play between defence and attack. The attacking trio featured Joseph Forrester on the right, Cameron Taylor on the left, and Josh Rice leading the line as the striker, with Konstantinos Misios and Rhyce Merrifield supporting him as right and left forwards, respectively. The substitutes for the match included Jake Preston, Owen Stafford, Michael Weldon, Youngin Song, and Mikail Basanmay.
The match began with Newton applying early pressure, and it wasn’t long before they were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute. The visitors converted the spot-kick, taking a crucial lead that set the tone for the remainder of the half. Litherland struggled to respond effectively, and just 13 minutes later, Newton doubled their advantage, leaving the home side trailing 2-0 at the break.
As the second half commenced, Litherland sought to change their fortunes. In the 55th minute, a tactical substitution saw Jake Preston replace Josh Rice, aiming to inject fresh energy into the attack. However, Newton continued to assert their dominance, scoring their third goal in the 64th minute, further extending their lead and putting the game beyond Litherland's reach.
In an effort to regain control, Litherland made further changes, introducing Owen Stafford for Paul Cliff in the 64th minute, followed by Michael Weldon coming on for Michael McDonald and Youngin Song replacing Konstantinos Misios, both in the 74th minute. The substitutions aimed to bolster the midfield and provide more attacking options, but Litherland struggled to create meaningful chances against a resolute Newton defence.
The final substitution occurred in the 79th minute, with Mikail Basanmay entering the fray for Rhyce Merrifield. Despite these tactical adjustments, Litherland could not find a way back into the match, and the game concluded with a disappointing 3-0 scoreline.
Callum Moffatt was recognised for his efforts on the pitch, showcasing determination and skill throughout the match. However, the overall performance of Litherland Remyca Res will need significant improvement as they prepare for their next challenge in the league.
