Away league match
The Friday previous to this match we had managed a very respectable draw against league leaders Leam Brakes (sorry no match report available), which had then been turned into a win when eagle eyed Mick Shearer realised they were fielding an unregistered keeper. This put us back on the top of the table and boded well for team moral.
Binley looked right up for this game from the off (definitely not a team who looked like they should be at the bottom end of the table). After 4 minutes a ball over the top of the defence was badly dealt with and Binley took the lead. This became a two goal lead a little later when they finished off an excellent move. On a positive note we did not let this early two goal deficit allow our heads to drop, and the 10 minutes of play following Binley’s goal became pivotal to the game. First of all Ryan scored the sort of goal Tariq dreams of, a deft flick releasing him from the defender, followed by a first time powerful shot across the keeper into the far corner. This was almost immediately followed by a strong header from Ryan following Beau’s cross, that was initially kept out, but then Ryan pounced on the re-bound to give him his second goal in 2 minutes. Buoyed by this we then took the lead when the keeper misjudged a shot from Dan. More fast and furious play took us to half time but no further goals.
The second half continued to be played at a fast pace. We maintained lots of pressure on the Binley goal, Dan having a shot well saved, but couldn’t find another goal to ease the pressure. Meanwhile our defence held strong, Jacks fast reactions to a through ball snuffing out the biggest threat Binley could muster. After a frantic 20 minutes in the first half when 5 goals were scored the second half ran out goalless and we held onto our lead.
Ryan definitely had his best game of the season, playing at a high intensity all game. His two goals were just reward for his efforts. Most pleasing was the fact we didn’t capitulate when we went two down early on – something I had criticised the lads for earlier in the season.
