After another 1 month lay-off due to various match cancellations and ½ term we eventually got to play again. Just like in our previous game this extended break was a concern for the coaches in terms of the team’s fitness and cohesion, so we were unsure of what to expect.
My 1st half match notes were very brief – not much to get excited about! Athletic led 2:1 and just about deserved to, most of the lads looking like they hadn’t played football individually or together for a long time. Jayden scored our opener after a good assist from Ollie.
A really good move immediately at the start of the 2nd half nearly saw us equalise and gave hope for a better 2nd half. Unfortunately we couldn’t get any sort of foothold in the game and team confidence seemed to ebb away as we repeatedly gave away soft goals. Half way through the 2nd half another goal by Jayden gave us a bit of a lift, but Athletic were growing in confidence and ran out 5:2 winners.
Both Mick and Steve and all the lads were clearly very deflated. From a team brimming with confidence from an 8:2 win at the end of November we had lost heavily to a team without a win all season. There are multiple excuses we could make, many of them justified, but we haven’t gone from a good team to a bad team over the last 3 months and we must now re-group, train hard and build our confidence back up. Hopefully this Sunday will give us an opportunity to put this game behind us.
