Home league match

A solid performance saw Athletic run out 2-0 winners at home against strong opposition. Whilst not a match for the football purists, the Athletic boys showed great strength and determination to get the better of their opponents in a physical encounter.

The scoring was opened after Josh Barrett won a corner down the left hand side. The delivery from the resulting corner wasn’t the best, but it caused confusion amongst the opposition defence and Gough reacted first to pounce on the loose ball and slam home from close range.

The match continued from end to end, with neither side being able to retain possession for sustained periods. The opposition had a number of attacks. These were thwarted by the back three of Davies, Burrows and Gough or by the rock solid hands of Chaston in the Athletic goal. McConnell and Launchbury were busy and worked tirelessly in midfield, but Athletic were unable to create any further clear cut chances.

The second half continued in the same manner, but Athletic looked composed and assured. Winning their individual battles, the opposition were reduced to mostly long range chances which need to be high quality to get past Chaston. Their one clear cut opportunity was brilliantly blocked by a combination of substitute Blake and McConnell. The back three of Gough, Burrows and Maciejewski marshalled their forward line well and Athletic were able to enjoy more of the ball.

Barrett picked up a loose ball and rounded the keeper, but in delaying the shot failed take the opportunity. Much better width in the second half saw the wingers get into dangerous positions. Athletic secured the win with 15 minutes to go. A scramble in the box and Davies got a shot away, the ball was deflected into the path of Barrett who slotted neatly past the keeper.

The final 15 minutes epitomised the Athletic performance. McConnell and Burrows gave two big hearted performances to keep the opposition at bay, but it was a huge performance from Gough that secured Man of the match. His man didn’t get a chance all day and his work rate matched with impressive physicality contributed to the stellar defensive performance by all and an impressive Athletic win and clean sheet.

A big three points for the Launton boys and it sets us on our way after the unlucky defeat in the season opener. COYY!
