Away league match
In a disappointing away fixture, Labyrinth Football Club succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Rustenburg City FC at Olympia Park Rustenburg on 27 April 2025. The match kicked off at 1:00pm and saw the home side dominate proceedings, leaving Labyrinth with much to ponder as they returned home.
Labyrinth set up in a traditional 4-4-2 formation, with Ramong Koketso guarding the goal. The defensive line consisted of Kaelo Phillis on the right, Monchusi Motlhatswi on the left, and the central pairing of Karabo Molekwa and Letlhogonolo Motang. In midfield, Thabang Pule operated on the right, while Phakiso Lenyora took up the left flank, with Rebaone Molekwa and Jacob Zimba anchoring the centre. Up front, Mogorosi Katane and Kàmogelo Mogotsi were tasked with leading the line, looking to exploit any gaps in the Rustenburg defence.
The substitutes for Labyrinth included Amogelang Lesedi, who would later be introduced into the fray as the match progressed.
The first half saw both teams struggle to find their rhythm, with neither side able to break the deadlock before the interval. The Labyrinth defence held firm against Rustenburg's advances, but the visitors lacked the cutting edge in attack, leading to a goalless first half.
The second half began with renewed intensity, and Labyrinth found a breakthrough in the 58th minute when Jacob Zimba unleashed a stunning strike from outside the area, sending the ball soaring into the net. This goal momentarily lifted the spirits of the Labyrinth players and supporters alike.
However, the lead was short-lived as Rustenburg responded swiftly. Just five minutes later, in the 63rd minute, the home side was awarded a penalty after Monchusi handled the ball inside the box. The Rustenburg player converted the spot-kick with a precise right-footed shot, bringing the score to 1-1 and shifting the momentum back in favour of the hosts.
Rustenburg continued to press, and their efforts paid off in the 75th minute when they scored again with a long-range strike that left Koketso with no chance. The home side's confidence surged, and they began to dominate possession, leaving Labyrinth scrambling to regain control.
In a tactical move, Labyrinth made a substitution in the 81st minute, bringing on Amogelang Lesedi for Phakiso Lenyora in an attempt to bolster their midfield and regain some attacking impetus. However, the change did little to stem the tide of Rustenburg's attacking play.
The final blow came in the 86th minute when Rustenburg completed their scoring with a well-executed team move, culminating in another right-footed finish that sealed a comprehensive victory for the home side.
As the final whistle blew, Labyrinth FC were left to reflect on a match that promised much but delivered little in terms of points. The defeat highlighted areas for improvement as they look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
