Away league match
Following last weeks abandoned game which denied us the opportunity to claim a potential maximum of 6 points start to the season it was go again at Clubmoor. City of Liverpool spun the tables and raced into a 2 goal league as we’d done a week before which left us shell shocked. Injuries and players absent due to self isolations had dealt a cruel twist of fate in the lead up to this game and half of our defence was makeshift with Ethan deputising at right back and Ant dropping into centre back with both Dan & Jay suffering with ankle injuries. The response from going two down was excellent, the lads dig in and showed tremendous character. A well struck free kick from Ant in the 26th minute cannoned of the bar and Paddy couldn’t get enough on the rebound to convert. The breakthrough finally came though when Zico done well jinking his way into the box, the ball was nipped away from him but fell to Alex who dribbled past 2 defenders and hit a brilliant effort low and hard past the keeper.
The goal restored our faith and we came out the traps quick in the second half. Kaleb played a quick one two with Paddy and our number 14 slid a stunning pass into Gift’s path. He kept his composure to fire past the keeper to level things up. It was now very much game on and was like a basketball match. City of Liverpool got back in front just a minute later when a direct dead ball was clipped up and the resulting header looped over a stranded Joe Wilson. Their lead only last a minute though, Gift went on a great run and played a dangerous ball across the face of goal which was cleared into the path of Jude. Our left back hit a rocket of a shot which was parried out, Zico was brave enough to get his body in between two defenders and got enough on the ball to divert it into the back of the net. Gift should have put us in front just before the hour when his effort was put wide following another terrific ball played through by Kaleb. We found ourselves behind for the fourth time and yet again it was by virtue of a direct free kick struck wickedly into the box and headed home. Our attitude and fighting spirit to get something out of the game was rewarded when the referee awarded us a penalty for a push in the box. Up stepped Anthony Cooke who kept his cool for his second of the season. It was a tremendous game of football and on reflection a draw was most definitely a fair result. For us we need to view it as a point gained rather than 2 dropped and hopefully keep the momentum going into next weeks game.
