Away league match

In a game that had absolutely everything a late header from Kaleb Sweeney secured all 3 points in an entertaining spectacle at Maiden Lane. Atletico took the lead after just 2 minutes however our response was fantastic and we began to create some great opportunities with the forwards releasing the ball quicker around the final third. Gift who had started with real purpose struck one shot just wide and had another well saved before he was finally rewarded in the 15th minute. Jay kept the ball alive from a deep corner and clipped the ball back in which was smashed home by our number 11. A strange refereeing decision resulted in a penalty being awarded to Atletico just 3 minutes after we’d got ourselves level. George who was filling in at right back was deemed to have pushed one of their forwards and the resulting spot kick was fired home by former player Michael May. It was a harsh decision but the lads didn’t let their heads drop. Within a ruthless 13 minutes of play we had raced into a 5-2 lead. Ant linked up well with Kaleb who slipped in Alex who made no mistake with a clinical low finish and our top goal scorer then turned provider with a great cross which was headed home at the near post by Kaleb. Ant then unleashed a stunning long range strike from just inside their half for an early goal of the season contender which Alex took inspiration from also catching the keeper out from long range. It was a breathtaking spell in the game but Atletico were given a lifeline just before the break when a dubious free kick was awarded. We failed to deal with their delivery into the box which saw the resulting header nestle in to make it 5-3.

We couldn’t pick up where we left off in the second half and the frustration set in again when Atletico caught us out to make it 5-4 just 3 minutes in. Their persistence was then rewarded with an equaliser when a fantastic cross into the box was headed home to level things up at 5-5. Huge credit to our lads though they dig in and continued to probe, substitute Ethan done well to keep a Joe Wilson kick in play and clipped a ball down the left channel to Jude who’d made an overlapping run. He hung the ball up superbly and found Gift who’s header crashed off the bar. The luck went our way though when the rebound fell to Kaleb who’s header seem to take an age to cross the line. Atletico threw everything at us in search of salvaging a point and they very nearly did only for Sam to clear off the line which was enough for us to take maximum points and keep the unbeaten start in The Tuebrook JFL going.
