vs MSB Woolton Warriors
Home league match
Woolton Warriors who scored a late winner were the opposition as we looked to secure another victory in pursuit of the title. Kaleb Sweeney and Alex McDonald both returned to the starting line up in place of Treasure Asuquo and Ethan Danku as we set up in our preferred 4-3-3 formation. The deadlock was broken with a bullet header by Sam O'Neill who opened his account for the season following a well taken Zico Williams corner after 24 minutes. It came during a period when the visitors had a good spell and a targeted attack down our left channel with was dealt with well by both Jude Carroll and James Boner.
Asuquo and Danku both came on at the start of the second half and brought an increase in tempo in our attacking play. Asuquo won his individual battles alongside the ever committed Ben Devlin giving skipper Paddy Clegg licence to push on and supply the ammunition. It was his ball that found Ethan Danku in the left channel and his cross was finished with the backheel of Gift Sibanda in an almost carbon copy of the goal our young winger scored himself a week ago. Woolton got in behind our high line and it left James Boner having to make a desperate attempt to tackle from behind. He got a toe to the ball and their striker was able to get his shot off however the referee awarded MSB a spot kick and booked Boner. The resulting kick was buried home and for a 5 minute period it slightly unsettled us as our lead was narrowed. It didn't take long however before we took control and Sibanda claimed his second. It came via another corner by Williams which was flicked on by O'Neill the keeper tipped the ball out only into the path of Sibanda who looped the ball effortlessly in stunning fashion on the hour mark. Ethan Danku who is playing arguably his best spell for the club grabbed our fourth and his 11th of the campaign with a rasper of a half volley. A crazy period then followed with the visitors losing their heads and this saw a yellow card followed by a red for dissent leaving Woolton to see out the remaining 8 minutes with 10 men. The icing on the cake was our 5th which was reminiscent of Michael Owen's finish for England vs Argentia in 98. Alex McDonald picked the ball up centrally and cut across the edge of the box and arrowed a superb reversed finish into the far top corner to wrap up all 3 points.
