Home cup match

Just as it looked like extra time was required a last minute strike from the right peg of Paddy booked our place in the final of the league cup on 8th May in what was a dramatic and non-stop entertaining semi final tie vs Leighbridge who surely by now must be sick of the sight of us. After a tense opening few minutes the deadlock was finally broken when Lewis Jones played a clever ball through to Ross who showed real calmness to fire past the keeper. Moments later a long ball over the top found Mitchell who beat the offside trap with a 1v1 with the keeper our number 11 rounded him with speed only to be hacked down just outside the area. Any other game would have resulted in a red card being shown however the referee decided to decide against it and award a free kick. It was a poor decision as Mitchell done the hard part and only had to roll the ball in the empty net. Paddy took the free kick but failed to hit the target. Half Time 1-0.

Leighbridge really upped their game in the second half and two goals from their centre forward the 2nd a classly finish on 38 minutues looked like they were about to turn the tide in their favour. Credit to our lads though who continued to push to the end, sensing that leighbridge were trying to defend and hold on to the lead we went at them with wave after wave of attack. Lewis missed a 1v1 which the keeper saved and both Paddy and Mitchell were guilty of some poor finishing. It was begining to look like it wasn't going to be our day as the clock rolled down to just 6 minutes to go. Jamie done brilliantly clipping a clever ball to Mitchell who used his power and pace to beat his marker and smash the ball home to level the scoring. It was more than we deserved and the fightback had knocked the stuffing out of Leighbridge who were sat far too deep continuing to invite pressure from our front line. With the referee indicating there were just 2 minutes left to play Jamie found himself in the box after a fine switch pass from Paddy found his way to him, our skipper continued to make a lung bursting run and Jamie had the inteligence to set the ball for him to hit a stunning effort which flew into the top corner. There was no way back now for Leighbridge it was a knock out blow delivered with some conviction and books our place in the final vs Botanic.
