It was another beautiful blue-bird Saturday morning in SW London and Kiwi FC were buzzzing to get out the gate following a sensational mid-week inspiration post by none other than Phil Riley. Opponents today were right up alongside Kiwi FC on the table so it was a must win to get some clearance from them and rest at the bottom of the table. Strange not to have a beer theme set for the day - hoping this match report brings this back.
The team warm up got off to a hot start with Dimitri requesting more names than on Schlinder's list and Sam seemingly never being able to get out of the warm up circle. Fin included a junior's warm up drill with two instructions that I still got wrong to Fin's amazement.
Kiwi FC were cool and calm in the first 30min with some ridiculous midfield exhibition play by Captain 'Fin'tastic and Declan Rice prodigy Robbie Bradley. The ball was played well round the park but we were unable to get close to the opponents goal. The backline were busy defending a number of attacking runs however worked well together to keep tight and cover the through balls.
The turning moment in the match came when TC, Kiwi FC's Chris Wood, broke away from the backline through on goal (30 yards out). TC simply couldn't be bothered running any further and decided to score an absolute top bins screamer from a good 20-25 yards out, potentially scoring the teams Goal of the Season. Kiwi FC were gobsmacked; which some would argue directly led us to conceding two quick goals before the end of the half. The first down the right wing with a cross and header; the second down the left with a matching top class finish. HT: 1:2 down.
No matter, Kiwi FC kicked off the second half with some great energy, playing more direct football winning some promising corners; it wasn't long before Xav scored a surprise goal catching a defender off guard tucking a shot away right in front of goal. All square 2-2.
It was at this stage that Kiwi FC's legs started to disintegrate, the team were simply out run and went on to concede two more goals ending the game with a 4-2 loss.
The effort can't be challenged at all but the levels of fitness definitely could be!! Fin was awarded the Man of the Match during a lively fine session followed by what seemed an age to get to Hawkins Forge.
It was excellent to see everyone again - seems as though we need to clinch 2-3 key wins to ensure we're free of relegation. Let's get those mid-week running shoes on and get to every game to ensure we cement our spot in the league for next season.
Viva Kiwi FC!
