Home league match
Saw the team make a trip to the lovely Wimbledon extensions. Greeted by a tanned looking BB, fresh on his return from NZ, the boys were amped to sneak a few points from the Gorillas who were sitting 3rd on the table. A few games of two touch ‘eel’ had team morale at a high and the starting 10 started pinging the ball around with confidence before heading onto the pitch.
The game started well, and we quickly found acres of space in behind their centre mid-fielders. A few chances came our way but owing to the various bobbles around the box, could not be converted. The boys continued to work hard and were undoing the Gorillas play by play. A dynamic duo between Ollie and Ewan was quickly forming at the top of the pitch and their defenders had no answer for their pace. Halfway through the first half, Jevon played a delightful ball to Connor on the left wing and a fast-paced break from him saw him enter the box before their defender wiped him out from behind. Massive calls for a penalty went over the referee’s head and shortly thereafter the Gorillas were on a counterattack. A weak clearance from the back line saw their attacker in a position to slot a poor overhead kick into an empty goal. 1-0 down the boys went, very much against the run of play and the score stayed this way until half time.
A few more motivational words at half-time saw the boys head out slightly refreshed and looking for a goal. Against the run of the wind, the tika-taka football from the first half quickly disappeared and we found ourselves playing long to Ollie and Ewan which was frustrating the Gorillas. The best chance of the game came following some great link play on the left-hand side, Ewan played the ball into Conor who was then in on goal. A good save from their keeper carried the ball to Ewan 5 metres out from the goal. Unfortunately, it was not to be as, the left peg of Ewan carried the ball well over the goal and into the changing rooms. The game continued to flow, with Dom and Frisch leading from the back and winning tackle after tackle. A few tactical substitutions followed as injuries began showing in the team, a fresh Nacho came on to bolster the midfield. A few moments later, after some pushing off the ball and more effective time wasting from the Gorillas, Kiwi FC saw another freekick carried onto the post, the ball rebounded kindly to Nacho who couldn’t quite get the right angle and his shot was sent into the rear post.
The full-time whistle went, and the game stayed 1-0, another tough defeat for Kiwi FC which could have easily gone our way. An enjoyable after match in the Fox and Hound saw some outrageous comments from BB but has led to a recruit being signed, it will be interesting to see where Vick finds himself next week
