Away friendly match

It was meant to be the start of the Fife Amateur League season, but unfortunately due to the Covid guidelines opponents St. Andrews Uni were unable to play. Instead the club hastily arranged a friendly with East of Scotland side St. Andrews United at Clayton Park.

The weather was horrendous throughout the day, but the surface as Clayton Park was like a bowling green and was in superb condition, coping with the volume of rain water well.

The Colts started the game brightly and had a few good chances in the opening 15 minutes or so before the home side came into the game and taking the lead in the 19th minute when the offside trap was beaten with the defence halting expecting the whistle.

St. Andrews were knocking the ball around well as Colts slowed the tempo and it turned into a disappointing opening 45 minutes with strikers Andrew Reade and Andrew Smith unable to convert chances that fell their way.

After a stern half time talking to, the Colts team responded to the manager's comments and got themselves back into the game but both sides never seriously troubled the opposing keepers. As the second half went on, fitness seemed to become an issue in the soaking conditions and several players started lagging.

In injury time a mistake at the back presented the home side with their second and it was game over.

It drew an end to a disappointing, but difficult pre-season but it must all be put to the back of the mind as the season belatedly starts with a trip to Pittenweem Rovers, who were on the wrong end of an opening day nightmare - going down 9-0 to Cupar Hearts (who merged with AM Soccer during the summer).

The Colts need to be a lot more clinical in front of goal, chances are being created which is a positive. At the back, silly mistakes need to be eradicated and 11 leaders need to be out on the pitch encouraging their team mates along. But with some players getting another 90 minutes in the bank, it's all systems go to return to Pittenweem who were Fossoway's last opponents prior to the lockdown starting with a hard-fought 3-2 win with goals from Andrew Reade, Scott Powrie and Jamie Forrester.

A repeat of that performance and result would be very welcome indeed!
