For any late arrivals, or those prone to blinking, may be forgiven for thinking the half-time score was 1-0 to the visitors. For those late getting to the game or with that blink-fetish, missed 4 goals in a crazy opening 8 minute spell.
It was the Colts that got off to a rapid start with Jamie Forrester opening the scoring on 4 minutes when he closed quickly and the clearance rebounded on him into the net.
As I was busy doing the Social Media duties updating the opening goal, I look up as Andrew Reade receives the ball from distance just outside the centre circle and unleashed a shot that caught the visiting keeper off his line and the ball sailed over his huge frame into the top corner for 2-0 in the 5th minute.
As everyone is looking around and discussing such a great start, those blinking then missed the visitors getting in on the scoring act when Mark Harrison beat Mark Robertson in the air to head home to make it 2-1 on 7 minutes.
Moments later it was all-square when a brilliant Steven Peggie free-kick curled over the wall, off the bar and into the net for 2-2.
It seemed to settle down a bit after that with both sides creating chances with McKenzie and Mulland having chances for the visitors, while Callum Grindlay had a couple of chances – a turn and shot saved, and a free kick just over – and Dan Kenny flicking a header just wide of the far post.
The Colts nearly had a chance to take the lead in the 41st minute when the visiting keeper fumbled a routine catch, but YMCA were able to clear the danger. Peggie then slotted a well-worked move and one-two to give the visitors that 3-2 half time lead (or 1-0 for those arriving after 8 minutes!).
The second half started with both sides again creating chances with Kieran Wilson missing a great chance when he headed over in the 58th minute and then Kenny bringing a great save from the keeper from a header from a long Andrew Gourlay throw.
Kirkcaldy had a great opportunity to put the game to bed in the 69th minute when Derek Page was adjudged to have fouled in the box, but keeper Robertson guessed correctly to brilliantly deny Jordan Hutchison’s spot kick.
The Colts had a goal disallowed in the 80th minute for handball as they went in search of an equaliser, whilst the visitors had a chance of their own when sub Brown fired over. A late equaliser was not meant to be though as Scott Sneddon was unlucky as he latched onto Wilson’s flick on but his looped effort fell the wrong side of the post.
Ultimately the result didn’t cost either side progress into the knock out stage of the Jon Harrison Memory Trophy, just affecting who each would play. The Colts now travel on Tuesday to old foes Auchtermuchty Bellvue at Low Park.
Man of the Match for the Colts today was right back Greg Stapleton who put in a very hard working shift with some great play.
