vs Inkberrow Eagles Girls U13
Home league match
Lions faced Inkberrow in their first league game of the season.
Inkberrow already flying high having played 2 and won 2. Inkberrow are a very strong and skillful side having played in div 1 last season finishing 2nd.
We knew today would be a massive test, the league is full of good sides and I expect inkberrow to finish near the top of the table.
We have worked hard in the last couple of weeks on pressing higher up the pitch and winning the ball back higher up to give us chance to create on the counter attack. This showed from the kick off and we put Inkberrow from the kick off.
We started quickly and pressed really well, winning lots of tackles and looking to pass the ball well when in possession.
We had given some key instructions to certain players prior to kick off and everyone was doing exactly what was asked of them.
The defense looked very solid with ruby offering great cover against the inkberrow quick counters and the other back 3 looking comfy both in the tackle and in possession.
The midfield worked very hard to win and keep the ball and the passing from all 3 was creating lots of trouble for the Inkberrow back line.
Our first goal was possibly slightly against the run of play as Inkberrow had been on the front front until a quick break from lions found Scarlett out wide a shot was spilled by the Inkberrow keeper and Scarlett reacted quickest to slide in to beat the keeper to the rebound.
Within 5 mins it was 2-0. Lotte finishing Gracie who turned inside and crossed towards Scarlett. The ball was half cleared to Jess M who hit it first time from probably 30 yards and it flew into the top corner leaving the keeper no chance.
Inkberrow kept the pressure up and Demi had to make a couple of smart saves to deny any goals.
Likewise Lions had another couple of half chances via Ali, Lotte, Gracie and Scarlett
Half time 2-0. More of the same requested second half.
Second half we started badly, the urgency had gone, not pressing quick enough and allowing Inkberrow to play out from the back and allowing their creative midfielders to find space.
It quickly became 2-2 and we looked a bit lost and started fearing the worst. Many teams would have folded and lost the game from this point but we did the opposite. We switched on and dug in and upped our work rate and passing.
This pushed Inkberrow back and we took the lead again. Lotte linking well with Jess M and playing a great ball over the top for Scarlett. She raced clear and smashed it into the top corner from a tight angle.
The rest of the game was very tight with both sides tiring.
Final score 3-2 lions.
A huge win and a great performance. Everyone was fantastic today and the win was well deserved.
Goes to show how far we have come and we should all be proud of the effort, work rate and teamwork of everyone.
Well done girls
