Away league match
Iwade Herons Rovers opened their new league in emphatic fashion with a 14-1 victory over a spirited Woodcombe Lionesses side. While the match began with a few near-misses, as Axl, Kaden, and Felix all had early chances, Rovers soon hit their stride and dominated the game.
The first goal came in the 6th minute when Finley, coming off the bench, converted a well-placed pass from Axl to get the scoring underway. This goal sparked a rapid succession of goals, with Kaden finding the net in the 7th minute, assisted again by Axl. Axl himself then struck twice, in the 8th and 9th minutes, with the latter a fantastic long-range shot that left the Woodcombe keeper helpless.
Finley continued the scoring with a solo effort in the 11th minute and then added another in the 15th, thanks to William’s assist. Woodcombe Lionesses pulled one back in the 16th minute, showing great resilience and spirit. However, William answered back in the 21st minute with a goal assisted by Freddie and went on to score again in the 25th and 29th minutes, the last assisted by Cooper.
Cooper continued his playmaking role with an assist for Finley in the 30th minute, and he found the net again in the 32nd minute. William completed his hat trick in the 33rd minute, followed by another goal from Finley in the 36th minute. Axl capped off a remarkable display with a goal in the 40th minute, set up beautifully by Pippa who nearly got on the scoresheet herself. She was inches away from connecting with a lovely cross-field ball to the back post, which would have been a well-deserved goal after her earlier assist.
Despite the scoreline, Woodcombe Lionesses displayed admirable determination and had a few standout players of their own. Finley’s impressive tally earned him the Parent Player of the Match, while Axl, with his creative play and energy, took home the Coach’s Player of the Match.
The Rovers made a strong statement in their season opener, showcasing depth, teamwork, and skill in converting chances. The Lionesses, though on the losing end, showed commendable resilience and sportsmanship throughout the match.
