After the euphoria of campaigning and elections, the dust settled and Incepcion came back to play football. Business first as the current and new committee members met before the game for the handover. It was done very professionally and promptly, with everything in the hands of the new secretary.
Nitro was our opponent for this week and we were feeling that we are going to be raped, given our previous meetings and the strength of them. Our new manager decided on wholesale changes to the team. Declaring that we will get to try new positions. Firstly, of course, placing himself as goalkeeper in the absence of Sherman. Next he named the back four, with Ben, the only known defender there. Harold, Patrick and Yiong made up the rest of defence. No other changes were made to the rest of the team.
We contained Nitro well in the first 15 minutes. With Harold putting in an outstanding performance at centre back. Playing the ball out of defence was something new and that frustrated Nitro. Nitro tried. And when they did made some attempts, SK stood up to the test and made several good saves to keep us in the game. We weathered the storm and felt confident as the half continued. 0-0 at half time. And the feeling was lose little is already a win.
2nd half and more changes were afoot. The defence continued their excellent performance and refused to budge. Managing to smother several attacks with determined defending and timely interceptions. Ben was covering way too much ground for his age and Yiong at DM was having to cover more blades of grass than he ever did. Bee gave away a penalty with a seemingly innocent nudge. Complaints went unanswered and we thought it's a goal down. Up step their kicker and struck a low hard shot to the left. SK flew down to his right and pulled off a magnificent save to deny Nitro. As the game went on, we went back to our roots. Relying on our route one approach, a goal kick from Daryl was flicked on by the lion head of Patrick. Colin was at the end of it and calmly lifted the ball over the on rushing goalkeeper into goal. A smash and grab and we were leading. Further pressure by Nitro were all repelled by a strong defence. And the game ended 1-0 to us. A victory. A first for the new manager.
Everyone felt good after the game. The sensation of a win over a better team was unbelievable. Let's hope this continues.
