Back at Mayflower Sec this week to play against Gaza. Apparently, this was supposed to be a morale booster before our BKK trip. Despite a low turnout, manager decided to start his BKK squad to give us a chance to work it out.
Things went pretty well and we controlled the game at hand. Despite controlling the game, we couldn’t create much chances. Our defence, marshalled by Ron and Jansen didn’t make it easy for ourselves as we kept losing the ball. We took the lead when a loose ball in the ball fell to Colin. Swinging his body, he launched himself into the air and perfectly executed an overhead kick into goal. We were next on the back foot as we struggled to contain their right winger. A cross by him was intercepted by Joe, who instinctively headed the ball wide to Harold. Harold then crossed it to Colin, who beat one player and scored at the near post. He could have easily squared it to either Yiong or the lung bursting Joe but he was too selfish to do so. Half time came and we were 2-0 ahead.
Second half started with Gaza really pressing us. And we made a mistake by losing the ball in the centre of defence and they made it count. Minutes later, another mistake gave them their equaliser. Heads went down as we struggled to cope. We restore our lead when a free kick by Jiunn on the right put Yew Boon through. He rounded the keeper and slotted it in. We had several great chances following that. Colin scored his hat trick when Joe crosses it in, looped up and Colin volleyed it into the top corner. Great goal. We had more chances as well with Dave waltzing through the field but couldn’t finish as he ran out of breath. Yiong did the same thing as well but when faced with the keeper, he couldn’t beat him. Down the other end, we conceded another goal through another defensive mistake. Whistle blew shortly after for full time.
A laboured victory but welcome return from Ben and Jiunn. We also distributed the latest 2019 kit, generously sponsored by Bee, Octavius and Jiunn. This new kit will make its debut in BKK. No game next week in Singapore as the rest of us travel to BKK for our annual tour. We hope to have a smooth and fun trip.
