A beautiful sunny morning contrasted the last time this fixture was attempted when the match was cancelled after arrival due to a frozen pitch! Good to go but a little 'bobbly', Hook would have to keep their wits about them when trying to play the ball along the ground.
A good start to the first half showed Hook's intent, lovely passing, perhaps a little slow on the move, but nice build-up. the only thing that lacked was the final ball that was consistently over-hit. Unfortunately, the Fleet 'keeper was lightning off his line and read every through-ball very well to cut them out. Fleet did have a reasonable number of skirmishes in the Hook box, keeping the hearts in the mouths of the manager and away supporters, and only a terrific double save from C S kept the game tied at half time.
Holding the formation and asking the players to make the most of the fact there were 4 Fleet defenders against Hook's 2 attackers was the theme of the half -time talk... Utilising the space in midfield better and try to play around the Fleet defence would be key to taking the next step.
he second half started well and, particularly from the left side, there were some very good moves that got Hook in behind the defence with the ball. It was only a matter of time before Hook scored, coming from a solid strike that the Fleet 'keeper couldn't quite hold. The rest of the second half was generally dominated by Hook, with a couple of awful bobbles leading to miss-hit shots when 2 players were through on goal keeping Fleet in it to the end. That said, it certainly looked more likely that Hook would add to their tally rather than concede.
Final result was a deserved win, and yet another clean sheet! Fantastic effort from all on a notably warm day. Keep it going Hook! 2 games to go...
